Demonstration Gardens

The Chinle C&S Society developed and maintains two widely acclaimed outdoor cactus and succulent gardens in Grand Junction, with substantial support and assistance from both the WCBG and CSU Extension.

The first garden was developed in 2000 at the CSU Extension Office at the Mesa County Fairgrounds. A second garden was established in 2002 at the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens.

Volunteering for periodic garden maintenance duties is a good way for members to learn how to plant and care for cacti and succulents in their own gardens. Contact the Gardening Committee for further details.

Monthly Programs

Each month the Chinle C&S Society provides a program to members and guests designed to foster understanding and appreciation of all kinds of succulent plants, including cacti. Program types include presentations by special speakers, "do-it-yourself" workshops, travelogues, hikes, tours, as further described below.

Garden Tours

Each summer the Chinle C&S Society members are treated to a tour of members' gardens. This half-day event usually involves a Chinle caravan and visits to five or six gardens, followed by a group picnic furnished by the Society after the tour is over. This is always a great time for socializing among members and opportunities to get ideas of techniques to use in our own personal gardens.

Annual Dinner Meeting

The Annual Dinner Meeting is a great social event, usually the highlight of the year, and occurs each December in place of the Regular Meeting. In addition to a splendid dinner, subsidized by the Society, there is a Silent Auction table where members can bid on extraordinary cacti and succulents. Also, each member enters a free drawing for a variety of door prizes, and everyone usually has a gift plant to take home to remember this event.

Plant Sales

Through the Society's gardening efforts, plant cuttings are obtained, potted, nurtured and made available for purchase by the public at community events such as Bloomin' Deals and through either consignment or purchase by local nurseries.

Field Trips

The Chinle C&S Society members have the opportunity to participate in various field trips, both local and regional. In the past, members have enjoyed "Cactus Walks" on the Colorado National Monument and other local field trips where we view plants in habitat, visits to Escalante Canyon and others as well as trips to Crump Greenhouse in Buena Vista (CO). Actually we've taken field trips that have included all of the 4-Corners states and a short way into Nevada.
